History

At APWG, our History curriculum is designed to spark children’s curiosity about the past and help them understand how people and events have shaped the world we live in today. We want children to enjoy learning about history and to feel confident exploring different time periods.

Children learn to ask thoughtful questions, examine evidence carefully, and appreciate that there can be multiple viewpoints about an event. They are supported in using accurate historical vocabulary so they can clearly explain what they have learned. Children also learn to communicate their ideas in a variety of ways.

Key Stage 1
Children are taught about events within living memory and beyond living memory to help them develop an understanding of chronological order.

Key Stage 2
The curriculum is taught in chronological order, enabling children to build a clear understanding of history from early Britain to the present day. Each topic introduces important historical figures, as well as the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the period, helping children understand how life has changed over time.

At APWG, we aim to give every child a strong understanding of the past and the skills to think carefully, ask questions, and make connections - skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
